In a free society, we presume that people should be able to speak freely, especially in relation to public issues and an individual's behavior in relation to these issues. But, people need to watch themselves for potential abuse of this freedom. The positive effect of freedom of speech is the fact that it promotes and encourages the flow of ideas , preserving democracy and all of the democratic institutions. This helps to uncover the truth and to make the leaders accountable for their actions.
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog on Human Rights and Democracy. I have a background in Law and I am a Human Rights advocate. I am a citizen of one of the most unsafe countries in the World: The Democratic Republic of Congo. I am glad that Government of Canada encourages and supports the universal values of Human Rights and the promotion of democratic institutions and practices around the world. I would like to think about how to engage a changing World from a Human Rights' perspective.

Speaking considerately and respectfully are important too.
ReplyDeleteYes, Nora. Freely speak but not offend
ReplyDeleteThat Voltaire quote says so much. We all expect to have the right to speak freely, but the moment someone says something that we don't agree with, we don't want to hear it. The truth is that we can't have it both ways, freedom of speech applies to everyone in a free society, for better or worse.
